Starting a new school year can bring a swirl of emotions such as excitement and curiosity but it can also bring anxiety and overwhelm. For our learners, books can play a powerful role in offering comfort, clarity, and confidence while making concepts more concrete. Picture books can act as gentle guides helping children understand routines, express feelings, and feel seen.

Here are 12 essential themes with 5 books each, totaling 60 thoughtful reads that will help ease the return to school.

1. First Day of School / Separation Anxiety

Why it matters: Starting school, or returning after a break, can be overwhelming. Many children struggle with separating from caregivers and adjusting to new environments. This can be especially tough for students with developmental differences, who may need more time to feel safe in unfamiliar places. Stories about separation and reassurance help validate children’s feelings and give them coping strategies.

2. Emotional Regulation

Why it matters: The start of school can be full of big feelings: excitement, frustration, fear, joy and so many more. For our learners, it’s especially important to have tools for recognizing emotions and learning how to manage them. Books on emotional regulation provide language, strategies, and reassurance that feelings are normal and manageable. The following 5 books can help you help your learners during back to school time.

3. Communication

Why it matters: For many children in special education, communication is one of the biggest hurdles at school. Whether it’s finding words to express needs, listening carefully to instructions, or navigating conversations with peers, communication impacts nearly every part of the school day. Strong communication skills promote self-advocacy, reduce frustration, and build confidence in forming relationships. Books in this theme introduce kids to new ways of expressing themselves, show examples of good listening and speaking, and normalize communication challenges.

4. School Dynamics (Classrooms, Teachers, Schedules)

Why it matters: School is a community of classrooms, hallways, and people, all with different roles. Understanding what to expect (who the teacher is, what the cafeteria looks like, why schedules matter) helps reduce anxiety. For our learners, seeing characters navigate these dynamics builds familiarity and comfort, making the school feel more predictable and welcoming.

5. School Rules & Procedures

Why it matters: Classroom success often hinges on clear expectations. Rules like raising hands, using quiet voices, or waiting in line can feel abstract without reinforcement. Books that model rules and routines help students see these behaviors in action, understand why they matter, and internalize them in a positive way. For children who benefit from visual or social stories, picture books are especially powerful.

6. Sensory Experiences

Why it matters: Back to school often means new sounds, smells, routines, and textures. These are things that can overwhelm our learners with sensory sensitivities. Books that acknowledge sensory experiences validate children’s feelings, reduce stigma, and open conversations about strategies for self-care and comfort in the classroom.

7. Making Friends & Being Kind

Why it matters: Friendships are at the heart of school life, but making and keeping friends doesn’t come naturally to all children. Books about kindness, inclusion, and empathy give students language and examples for positive social interactions. For students who may struggle with social cues, these stories provide gentle, clear models of how to connect with others.

8. Doing Something New

Why it matters: Trying new things, whether reading aloud, joining a group, or attempting a new skill, can trigger fear or resistance. Many of our learners benefit from encouragement to face challenges with bravery. Books in this category normalize mistakes, build resilience, and celebrate courage, showing that growth comes from stepping outside our comfort zones.

9. Being Unique

Why it matters: Many children in special education benefit from stories that celebrate individuality, self-confidence, and pride in who they are. Books about uniqueness send a strong message: every child brings something special to the classroom community, and differences should be celebrated.

10. Inclusion & Diversity

Why it matters: Representation and belonging are essential for a safe classroom. Students need to see themselves in stories and also learn to celebrate differences in others. Books about inclusion and diversity help cultivate empathy, reduce stigma, and set a foundation for an accepting classroom community.

11. Expectations (Growth Mindset, Hope for the Year)

Why it matters: The start of a school year is the perfect time to set a hopeful, encouraging tone. Our learners thrive when they know they’re capable of learning and growing, even when things are hard. Books about growth mindset, responsibility, and kindness help establish a classroom culture of perseverance and positivity, where mistakes are part of learning.

12. Fun Back-to-School Books

Why it matters: Not every book needs to teach a lesson. Sometimes laughter and silliness are the best icebreakers. Fun, lighthearted stories can help ease tension, spark joy, and make the classroom feel like a safe, welcoming space from day one.

This curated list of 60 thoughtful books across various themes offers a gentle, supportive foundation for your learners as they embark on a new school year.
